The Federal Government has proposed a harmonised timetable for major national examinations in 2027, with the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scheduled for March and the Senior School Certificate Examinations conducted by WAEC and NECO expected to take place between April and June.
The proposed arrangement is part of the government's efforts to improve coordination among examination bodies, reduce timetable clashes and ensure that students seeking admission into tertiary institutions can complete their examinations early enough to participate in the 2027 admission process.
According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the initiative is intended to facilitate the release of examination results by August 2027, allowing eligible candidates to commence tertiary admission processes by September.
Proposed 2027 Examination Dates
The proposed timetable released by the Federal Government outlines the following examination periods:
- JAMB UTME: March 15–25, 2027
- NECO SSCE: April 1–May 14, 2027
- WAEC WASSCE: May 11–June 18, 2027
- NABTEB examinations: June 1–July 5, 2027
- NBAIS examinations: June 10–July 9, 2027
The Ministry explained that the dates are part of ongoing consultations with the examination bodies and are intended to improve the overall examination calendar.
Why the Government Is Harmonising the Examination Calendar
For many years, Nigerian students have faced challenges arising from overlapping examination schedules. Candidates who register for multiple examinations sometimes experience difficulties preparing adequately for each examination or attending examinations scheduled within similar periods.
The proposed harmonisation seeks to address these concerns by establishing a more coordinated examination calendar.
The government also hopes that the earlier examination schedule will allow examination bodies to process and release results more efficiently, reducing delays that may affect university, polytechnic and college of education admissions.
What Students and Parents Should Know
Although the proposed timetable provides an indication of the government's plans for 2027, candidates should understand that the dates remain subject to official confirmation by the relevant examination bodies.
Students preparing for the 2027 UTME, WAEC and NECO examinations are advised to begin their preparations early and regularly monitor official announcements from JAMB, WAEC, NECO and the Federal Ministry of Education.
Schools are also expected to adjust their academic calendars and revision programmes in line with the eventual examination schedules.
The proposed harmonisation represents an important step towards improving examination coordination and ensuring that Nigerian students can progress into tertiary education without unnecessary delays.
