The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the timetable for the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External, with examinations scheduled to commence on Wednesday, November 4, and conclude on Saturday, November 21, 2026.
The examination is designed primarily for candidates who wish to obtain the Senior School Certificate outside the regular school-based examination arrangement.
According to information published by NECO, the 2026 SSCE External examination will run for approximately three weeks, during which candidates will sit for the subjects they registered for.
Registration and Examination Arrangements
NECO's official registration guidelines indicate that the 2026 SSCE External examination provides candidates with two examination options: a hybrid computer-based examination and a pen-and-paper examination.
Candidates are advised to study the registration guidelines and examination timetable carefully before completing their registration.
The council also provided a late-registration period from October 27 to November 3, 2026, following the conclusion of normal registration on October 26.
Candidates who registered for the examination are expected to confirm their examination centres, subjects and individual paper schedules before the commencement of the examination.
Importance of the NECO External Examination
The NECO SSCE External examination provides an opportunity for candidates who may have completed secondary school but need to improve their results or obtain the required qualifications for further education.
The examination is particularly relevant to candidates seeking admission into universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and other institutions that require Senior School Certificate results.
Candidates are therefore encouraged to prepare adequately and ensure that their registration details are correct.
Advice to Candidates
As the examination approaches, candidates should intensify their revision and familiarise themselves with the examination format applicable to their registration.
Those taking computer-based examinations should practise using CBT platforms to improve their confidence, speed and accuracy.
Candidates should also avoid relying on unverified examination information and should obtain their official timetables and instructions directly from NECO.
The council's examination timetable and registration guidelines are available through its official website.
