JSS1 First Term Week9

Peripheral Devices

TITLE:

Peripheral Devices

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:

You already know what a computer is and can name its main parts like the monitor, keyboard and mouse. You also understand that a computer can store and process information.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

1. Describe what a printer is and how it works.

2. Explain what a scanner does and its uses.

3. Identify a flash drive and its role in data storage.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:

- A picture or model of a printer.

- A picture or model of a scanner.

- A picture or model of a flash drive.

CONTENT

Printer

A printer is a device that takes digital text or pictures from a computer and puts them onto paper. For example, when a teacher in a Lagos school prints worksheets for students, that is a printer in action. The printer uses ink or toner to create the image. It moves the paper through a small motor so the ink lands exactly where it should. In many offices in Abuja, people use printers to copy contracts and reports.

Scanner

A scanner is a device that looks at paper documents and turns them into digital files that a computer can read. For instance, in a school office in Ibadan, a scanner copies a student ID card into a computer so it can be stored and printed later. The scanner uses light to scan the surface of the paper. The light is reflected back to a sensor that records the image. The scanned picture is then saved on the computer for future use.

Flash Drive

A flash drive is a small USB stick that stores data. A student might bring a flash drive to school to carry homework from home. The flash drive holds files in memory chips and plugs into a USB port on a computer. It is useful when you need to move files between two computers, such as when you finish a project at home and want to finish it on the school computer. Flash drives are handy because they are small, fast and can hold many files at once.

COMMON MISTAKES:

- Thinking that a printer can read documents instead of printing them.

- Believing that a scanner only needs a power supply and not a computer connection.

- Assuming a flash drive is the same as a memory card used in cameras.

EVALUATION

1. What does a printer do?

2. How does a scanner capture a document?

3. What is the main purpose of a flash drive?

4. Give an example of using a printer in your school.

5. Explain why a flash drive is handy when you have two computers.

SUMMARY

Today we learned about three important peripheral devices. We saw that a printer prints documents, a scanner reads paper into a computer, and a flash drive stores data for easy transfer. These devices help us use computers more effectively and make our work easier. The key points are that printers create paper copies, scanners digitise paper, and flash drives move data between machines.
