Tools for Computer & GSM Repairs

TITLE:

Tools for Computer & GSM Repairs

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:

You have seen a computer or a mobile phone in your school or home. You know that they have parts like a screen, battery, and buttons. You also know that when something breaks, it needs to be fixed with special tools.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

1. Identify and use different types of screwdrivers for computer and GSM repairs.

2. Understand the purpose of testers and how to use them safely.

3. Explain what a soldering iron is and how it helps in repairing electronic components.

4. Recognise the role of pliers in handling wires and small parts.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:

- A set of flathead and Phillips screwdrivers.

- A digital multimeter tester.

- A soldering iron with a stand.

- A pair of needle‑point and cutting pliers.

CONTENT

Screwdrivers

Screwdrivers are small tools that turn screws. In Lagos, a school technician uses a Phillips screwdriver to open a laptop case. A Phillips screwdriver has a cross‑shaped tip that fits into a cross‑shaped screw. A flathead screwdriver has a straight tip that fits into a straight screw. When you turn the screwdriver clockwise, the screw goes into the material. When you turn it counter‑clockwise, the screw comes out.

Using the wrong screwdriver can damage the screw head or the tool. Always match the screwdriver tip to the screw shape. Keep screwdrivers clean and store them in a toolbox. When you finish a repair, put the screwdriver back in its slot to avoid losing it.

Testers

A tester, such as a digital multimeter, checks electrical values like voltage, current and resistance. In a market in Kano, a GSM repairer uses a tester to see if a battery still gives power. To use the tester, you touch its probes to the component and read the display. If the reading is zero, the component may be broken. If the reading matches the expected value, the component is good.

Testers must be handled carefully. Do not touch the metal probes when the tester is on. Always switch the tester off before changing the probes. Keep the tester in a dry place to prevent corrosion.

Soldering Iron

A soldering iron is a hot tool that melts solder to join wires and components. In a small shop in Ibadan, a technician uses a soldering iron to fix a loose connection on a phone’s motherboard. The iron has a metal tip that heats up quickly. When the tip touches the joint, solder melts and flows, creating a solid bond. After the solder cools, the joint becomes strong.

Soldering irons come in different heat settings. A low heat setting is good for delicate parts like a phone screen. A high heat setting is used for larger components like a power board. Always use a soldering stand to keep the hot tip safe when you are not using it.

Pliers

Pliers are hand tools that grip, bend or cut wires. In a repair workshop in Abuja, a technician uses needle‑point pliers to hold a tiny wire while soldering. Pliers have two handles and a joint that can be opened or closed. Needle‑point pliers have a very fine tip that can reach small spaces. Cutting pliers can cut wire strands cleanly.

When using pliers, keep your fingers away from the joint. Grip the wire firmly but gently to avoid breaking it. After cutting, smooth the wire ends with a file or a small blade.

COMMON MISTAKES:

- Using a screwdriver that is too large for the screw, causing damage.

- Touching the metal probes of a tester while it is powered on.

- Applying too much heat with a soldering iron, which can burn the component.

- Gripping a wire too tightly with pliers, leading to wire breakage.

EVALUATION

1. What type of screwdriver would you use to open a laptop case with cross‑shaped screws?

2. How do you read the voltage on a digital multimeter?

3. Why is it important to use a low heat setting when soldering a phone screen?

4. Which type of pliers would you choose to bend a small wire inside a mobile phone?

5. Name one safety rule for handling a soldering iron.

SUMMARY

In this lesson, we explored four essential tools for fixing computers and GSM devices. We learned that screwdrivers come in flathead and Phillips shapes, and matching the tip to the screw prevents damage. Testers help us check electrical values safely, and we must keep the probes clean and the device off when changing them. A soldering iron melts solder to join components, and using the right heat setting protects delicate parts. Finally, pliers grip, bend, or cut wires, and using the correct type and grip prevents breakage. These tools form the foundation of any repair workshop, and mastering them will help you become a skilled technician.

- Screwdrivers fit the screw shape and turn screws in or out.

- Testers measure voltage, current and resistance safely.

- Soldering irons melt solder to join electronic parts.

- Pliers grip, bend or cut wires with precision.
