2. MEANING OF A COMPUTER SYSTEM

A computer system is a combination of hardware, software and peopleware working together to process data and produce useful information.

A computer system requires physical equipment, programmes and people to operate it effectively.

The three major components of a computer system are:

  1. Hardware
  2. Software
  3. Peopleware

3. HARDWARE

Meaning of Hardware

Hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer system that can be seen and touched.

Examples of computer hardware include the keyboard, mouse, monitor, system unit, printer, speakers, hard disk and flash drive.

Computer hardware is commonly grouped into input devices, output devices and storage devices, among other categories.

A. INPUT DEVICES

Meaning of Input Devices

Input devices are hardware components used to enter data and instructions into a computer for processing.

They allow users to communicate with the computer.

Examples of Input Devices

  1. Keyboard: Used to enter letters, numbers, symbols and instructions into a computer.
  2. Mouse: Used to point, click, select and move objects on the computer screen.
  3. Scanner: Used to convert printed documents and pictures into digital form.
  4. Microphone: Used to enter sound or voice into a computer.
  5. Webcam: Used to capture pictures and videos for the computer.
  6. Touchscreen: Allows users to enter commands by touching the screen.
  7. Joystick: Used mainly for controlling movement in computer games and simulations.
  8. Barcode Reader: Used to read barcodes on products in shops and other establishments.

Functions of Input Devices

  1. They help users enter data into a computer.
  2. They allow users to give instructions to the computer.
  3. They help capture sound, images and other forms of information.
  4. They enable communication between users and computers.

B. OUTPUT DEVICES

Meaning of Output Devices

Output devices are hardware components used to display or produce the results of data processed by a computer.

They present information in a form that users can understand.

Examples of Output Devices

  1. Monitor: Displays text, pictures, videos and other information on a screen.
  2. Printer: Produces hard copies of documents and pictures on paper.

Functions of Output Devices

  1. They display processed information.
  2. They produce printed documents.
  3. They provide sound output.
  4. They help present information to individuals or groups.
  5. They make the results of computer processing available to users.

C. STORAGE DEVICES

Meaning of Storage Devices

Storage devices are hardware components used to save data, information and programmes for future use.

Storage devices allow users to keep their files even when the computer is switched off, provided the information has been saved to non-volatile storage.

Examples of Storage Devices

  1. Hard Disk Drive (HDD): Used to store large amounts of data and programmes inside or outside a computer.
  2. Solid-State Drive (SSD): Used to store data electronically and often provides faster access than a traditional hard disk.
  3. USB Flash Drive: A portable device used to store and transfer files between compatible devices.
  4. Memory Card: A small storage device commonly used in phones, cameras and other electronic devices.
  5. CD (Compact Disc): An optical disc that can store digital information.
  6. DVD (Digital Versatile Disc): An optical disc used to store data, videos and other digital content.
  7. External Hard Drive: A storage device connected externally to a computer to store or back up files.

Functions of Storage Devices

  1. They store data and information for future use.
  2. They keep documents, pictures, videos and other files.
  3. They store software and operating system files.
  4. They help users transfer information between computers.
  5. They support backup and recovery of important files.

Note: Computer memory, such as RAM, also holds data and instructions. However, RAM is temporary working memory and normally loses its contents when power is removed. Storage devices such as SSDs and flash drives retain saved data without power.

4. SOFTWARE

Meaning of Software

Software is a collection of programmes and instructions that tell a computer what to do and how to perform specific tasks.

Unlike hardware, software cannot be physically touched. It operates through the computer's hardware.

Examples of software include Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Word, Google Chrome, calculators and media players.

Software is divided into two major categories:

  1. System software
  2. Application software

A. SYSTEM SOFTWARE

Meaning of System Software

System software is software designed to manage and control computer hardware and provide a platform for application programmes to run.

6. HOW THE COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER SYSTEM WORK TOGETHER

Hardware, software and peopleware depend on one another to make a computer system useful.

For example, when a student types an assignment:

  1. Peopleware: The student operates the computer and decides what to type.
  2. Hardware: The keyboard receives the student's input, and the computer processes it.
  3. Software: The word-processing application allows the student to type and edit the assignment, while the operating system manages the computer's resources.
  4. Storage: The student saves the assignment on an SSD, hard drive or flash drive.
  5. Output: The monitor displays the assignment, and a printer can produce a hard copy.

This example shows how the different components work together to complete a task.

7. IMPORTANCE OF THE COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER SYSTEM

The components of a computer system are important because:

  1. Hardware provides the physical equipment needed for computing.
  2. Software gives the computer instructions for performing tasks.
  3. Peopleware enables users to operate and manage computer systems.
  4. Input devices allow data and instructions to enter the computer.
