At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Define computer booting.
- Explain the meaning of cold booting and warm booting.
- Differentiate between cold booting and warm booting.
- Explain the meaning of computer shutdown.
- List the steps involved in properly shutting down a computer.
- State the importance of proper computer shutdown.
2. MEANING OF BOOTING
Booting is the process of starting or restarting a computer and loading the operating system into memory so that the computer becomes ready for use.
The operating system is the main software that manages the computer's hardware and software resources. Examples include Microsoft Windows, Linux and macOS.
When a computer is switched on, it performs some initial checks and loads the operating system. After this process, the user can log in and begin working.
Explanation of Booting
When a computer is switched off, its operating system is not actively running. When the user presses the power button, the computer begins the booting process.
During booting, the computer checks essential hardware components, starts the necessary system processes and loads the operating system. The computer then displays the login screen or desktop, depending on its settings.
Importance of Booting
- It starts the computer and prepares it for use.
- It loads the operating system.
- It allows users to access computer programmes and applications.
- It helps the computer initialise and check essential hardware.
- It prepares the computer to perform different tasks.
3. TYPES OF BOOTING
There are two main types of booting:
- Cold booting
- Warm booting
A. COLD BOOTING
Cold booting is the process of starting a computer from a completely powered-off state by switching on its power.
It is also called a hard boot in some basic computer studies materials, although the term can have other meanings in technical contexts.
Example:
When a student enters the computer laboratory in the morning and presses the power button of a computer that is switched off, the computer undergoes cold booting.
Steps Involved in Cold Booting
- Ensure that the computer is properly connected to a power source.
- Switch on the power supply, if necessary.
- Press the computer's power button.
- Allow the computer to perform its initial hardware checks.
- Wait for the operating system to load.
- Log in if the computer requests a username and password.
Advantages of Cold Booting
- It starts a computer that is completely switched off.
- It allows the computer to perform its normal startup checks.
- It can help resolve some problems when a computer is fully powered off and restarted.
B. WARM BOOTING
Warm booting is the process of restarting a computer without completely switching off its power first.
It is commonly performed by selecting the Restart option in the operating system.
Example:
When a computer user selects Start, then Power, then Restart in Windows, the computer undergoes warm booting.
Steps Involved in Warm Booting
- Save all open documents and files.
- Close applications that are running.
- Open the operating system's power options.
- Select Restart.
- Allow the computer to shut down its current session and restart.
- Wait for the operating system to load again.
- Log in if necessary.
Advantages of Warm Booting
- It allows the computer to restart without manually switching off its power.
- It can help resolve some temporary software problems.
- It is useful after installing certain updates or programmes that require a restart.
- It can help restore normal operation when the computer becomes slow or behaves unexpectedly.
4. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN COLD BOOTING AND WARM BOOTING
Cold Booting
- It starts the computer from a powered-off state.
- It involves switching on the computer's power.
- It is commonly used when the computer has been completely shut down.
- Example: Pressing the power button to start a switched-off computer.
Warm Booting
- It restarts a computer that is already powered on.
- It does not require the user to switch off the power supply completely.
- It is commonly performed using the Restart command.
- Example: Selecting Restart from the computer's power menu.
5. MEANING OF COMPUTER SHUTDOWN
Computer shutdown is the process of safely closing the operating system and turning off the computer.
During a normal shutdown, the operating system closes running processes and applications, completes necessary system operations and powers down the computer.
Proper shutdown helps protect files and reduces the risk of data loss or system problems.
Importance of Proper Computer Shutdown
- It helps prevent the loss of unsaved work.
- It allows running applications to close properly.
- It helps protect files and system data.
- It allows the operating system to complete necessary tasks.
- It reduces the risk of certain software and file-system problems.
- It saves electricity when the computer is not in use.
6. STEPS IN PROPER SHUTDOWN OF A COMPUTER
The following steps explain how to shut down a Windows computer properly.
- Save your work: Save all documents, assignments and other files you are working on.
- Close open applications: Close programmes such as word processors, browsers and other applications. If a programme asks you to save changes, save them before proceeding.
- Open the Start menu: Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar.
- Select the Power option: Click the Power icon in the Start menu.
- Choose Shut down: Select Shut down from the available options.
- Wait for the computer to turn off: Allow the operating system to close and the computer to power down completely.
- Switch off external power where appropriate: If necessary, switch off the monitor or the external power supply after the computer has shut down. Do not disconnect power while the computer is still shutting down.
Important Note: The exact appearance of the Start menu and Power options may differ depending on the version of Windows being used.
Other Ways to Shut Down a Computer
Some operating systems provide other shutdown methods, such as using a keyboard shortcut or a command. However, beginners should learn and use the normal shutdown option provided by the operating system.
Things to Avoid During Shutdown
- Do not switch off the power supply while the computer is still running normally.
- Do not unplug the computer while it is saving files or installing updates.
- Do not force the computer to shut down unless it has stopped responding and normal shutdown methods are unavailable.
- Always save your work before shutting down.
- Do not close the laptop lid and assume that the computer has shut down; closing the lid may only put it into sleep mode, depending on its settings.
7. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RESTART AND SHUTDOWN
Restart: This closes the current operating system session and starts the computer again. The computer remains powered as part of the restart process.
Shutdown: This closes the operating system session and turns off the computer.
Restart is useful when the computer needs to reload its operating system, while shutdown is appropriate when the user has finished working and wants to turn off the computer.
