Meaning of Fashion

Fashion is a way people choose what to wear each day. For example, in Lagos, many people wear bright Ankara shirts to celebrate festivals. Fashion is a style that changes over time and shows what people like to wear. It is not just about the clothes themselves but how they are worn and mixed.

Fashion shows in Abuja often display new styles that people want to copy. These styles are called trends. A trend is a new way of dressing that many people try to follow. When a trend starts, it becomes part of fashion.

Fashion is not only for the rich. Even students in school wear trendy T‑shirts that match their friends. Fashion helps people express their personality and culture. It is a form of communication that shows who you are.

Worked

Example 1:

What is fashion?

Step 1: Think of a popular style in your town.

Step 2: Notice how many people wear that style.

Step 3: Realise that the style is changing over time.

Answer: That is fashion.

Importance of Fashion

Fashion is important because it helps people feel good about themselves. For example, when a student wears a clean shirt, they feel proud and confident. Confidence is important for learning and making friends. Fashion can also bring people together in a community.

Fashion also helps the economy. In cities like Kano, many small businesses sell fabrics and accessories. When people buy new clothes, they support these businesses. This creates jobs and helps families earn money.

Fashion can show respect for culture. In Ibadan, people wear traditional wrappers for festivals. These outfits show respect for their heritage. They also teach younger people about their history.

Worked

Example 2:

Why is fashion important?

Step 1: Imagine a student who wears a neat uniform.

Step 2: The student feels confident and ready to learn.

Step 3: The student also helps support the local tailor.

Answer: Fashion is important because it boosts confidence and supports the economy.

Difference between Fashion and Clothing

Clothing is any item that covers the body, like shirts, trousers, or dresses. For example, a pair of jeans is clothing. Fashion is the style of wearing that clothing. A blue pair of jeans can be part of fashion if many people wear them together.

Fashion changes with time. A style that was popular last year may not be popular now. Clothing does not change its basic form. A T‑shirt will always be a T‑shirt, but the way it is worn can change.

Fashion is about choice and expression. Clothing is about covering and protecting the body. When you choose a bright Ankara shirt for a party, you are making a fashion choice. When you wear a jacket in cold weather, you are wearing clothing for protection.

Worked

Example 3:

Identify the difference.

Step 1: Look at a pair of sandals.

Step 2: Notice they are plain and not part of a trend.

Step 3: Realise they are clothing, not fashion.

Answer: Sandals are clothing; they are not fashion unless worn in a trendy way.

COMMON MISTAKES:

- Thinking fashion is only for the rich.

- Believing clothing and fashion are the same thing.

- Forgetting that fashion changes over time.
