Replacing Buttons
Definition
A button is a small object used to fasten cloth together.
For example, a boy in Lagos wears a shirt that has a button that fell off.
Replacing a button means putting a new button in the same place.
Choosing the right button
First look at the hole where the button used to be.
If the hole is small, pick a small button.
If the hole is big, pick a larger button.
The button should match the colour of the shirt.
Use a thread that is the same colour as the fabric.
How to sew a button by hand
1. Thread the needle with a thread that matches the shirt.
2. Use a thimble to push the needle through the button’s holes.
3. Hold the button in place on the fabric.
4. Tie a small knot on the underside of the fabric.
5. Sew through the fabric holes twice.
6. Tie a knot on the other side and cut the thread.
Safety tip
Always keep the needle away from your fingers.
Use the thimble to protect your hand.
Using a sewing machine for a button
1. Attach the button attachment to the machine.
2. Place the button on the fabric.
3. Use the machine to sew the button through the holes.
4. Remove the button attachment and tie a knot on the underside.
Worked Example 1
A student in Kano has a blue shirt with a missing button.
The hole is medium size.
Solution:
Step 1: Pick a blue button that is medium.
Step 2: Thread the needle with blue thread.
Step 3: Place the button on the hole and tie a knot on the underside.
Step 4: Sew through the fabric holes twice.
Step 5: Tie a knot on the other side and cut the thread.
Answer: The button is now fixed.
Worked Example 2
A girl in Ibadan wants to replace a button on her red dress.
The hole is small.
Solution:
Step 1: Choose a small red button.
Step 2: Thread the needle with red thread.
Step 3: Hold the button on the hole and tie a knot on the underside.
Step 4: Sew through the fabric holes twice.
Step 5: Tie a knot on the other side and cut the thread.
Answer: The dress is ready to wear again.
Mending Tears
Definition
A tear is a hole or cut in fabric.
For example, a girl in Abuja tore her dress while playing.
Mending a tear means stitching the fabric together so it looks whole again.
Why mend tears early
If you wait, the tear can grow bigger.
It can also become a big hole that is hard to fix.
Mending early keeps the garment useful.
How to mend a tear by hand
1. Clean the torn area with a damp cloth.
2. Hold the torn edges together.
3. Tie a small piece of thread to keep them in place.
4. Sew a straight stitch across the tear.
5. Tie a knot on the other side and cut the thread.
Using a sewing machine to mend a tear
1. Place the torn edges together.
2. Use a small piece of thread to hold them.
3. Sew a straight stitch across the tear.
4. Tie a knot on the other side and cut the thread.
Safety tip
Never sew a tear that is too large with a small needle.
Use a larger needle for thicker fabric.
Worked Example 1
A student in Lagos has a small tear on the sleeve of a shirt.
The tear is about one centimetre long.
Solution:
Step 1: Clean the tear with a damp cloth.
Step 2: Hold the edges together with a small piece of thread.
Step 3: Sew a straight stitch across the tear.
Step 4: Tie a knot on the other side and cut the thread.
Answer: The tear is now mended.
Worked Example 2
A boy in Kano has a tear on the front of his jacket.
The tear is about two centimetres long.
Solution:
Step 1: Clean the tear with a damp cloth.
Step 2: Hold the edges together with a small piece of thread.
Step 3: Sew a straight stitch across the tear.
Step 4: Tie a knot on the other side and cut the thread.
Answer: The jacket looks whole again.
Common Mistakes:
- Using a thread that is too thick for the button holes.
- Not tying a secure knot before sewing the button.
- Leaving the thread loose after mending a tear.
- Sewing the button too far from the original position.
- Using a sharp needle on a delicate fabric and tearing it.
EVALUATION
1. How would you replace a button on a shirt that has a small hole?
2. What steps would you take to mend a tear that is one centimetre long?
3. Why is it important to use a matching thread colour when replacing a button?
4. What could happen if you leave the thread loose after mending a tear?
5. Describe how you would choose a button size for a large hole.
6. List the steps for using a sewing machine to attach a button.
7. Explain why cleaning the tear before mending is important.
8. What should you do if the button hole is too big for a small button?
9. How can you keep a tear from growing bigger before you mend it?
10. Why should you tie a knot on both sides of a button?
SUMMARY
Today we learned how to replace a button and mend a tear.
- You choose a button that matches size and colour.
- You sew the button carefully, tying knots on both sides.
- You mend a tear by cleaning, aligning edges, stitching straight, and knotting.
- You use a thimble to protect your fingers.
- You can use a sewing machine for faster button attachment.
We will practise these skills in the next class.
